Beyond The Basic Bag

Complex equations present themselves in many forms (shapes and sizes, too). Not all of them can be solved on a chalkboard, either. These unique problems often require unique solutions. In many cases, it seems, flexible packaging is the answer.

Flexible Packaging Growth

Poly with New Purpose

In the wake of a pandemic, new uses for poly packaging are popping up left and right - and you don't need to be a math whiz to figure them out. From the test kits and biohazard waste bags to packaging for face shields and masks (and a few other unexpected purposes), poly bags have become the Swiss Army Knife of packaging.

Poly Bags with New Purpose

Flexible in more than form

Sure, the poly may be plain, but its usage can be far from ordinary. We've often seen our typical bags used for atypical applications - a gusseted bag, for example, purposed to clean up plastic waste in Antarctica. Even our furniture bags find themselves covering objects outside of the norm, like fencing, sheet rock, doors and certain appliances. That's flexible packaging so flexible, it can stretch to any reach of the imagination.

Your Bag, Reimagined

The eternal question - is it really just a bag? Well...sure. But with the right mind, it can be much more than that. A bag can be a beautiful thing. So, leave the chalkboard in the classroom and head to DPPSC.com. There, you'll find all the tools you need to solve any packaging equation that comes your way. Imagine that. Poly Mailers and the Evolution of Shipping

Let’s talk about shipping. It starts with our relatively young, national love affair with denim. Sure, jeans are an American wardrobe staple now, but the trend is overall relatively new. Before the 1940s jeans were just for cowboys and carpenters – nobody in polite society wore them. Then, U.S. servicemen took to wearing them in their downtime on their world travels. Movies like James Dean’s Rebel Without a Cause popularized jeans among the younger crowd who wanted to be edgy without, you know, being edgy. By the 1970s, denim was de facto casual wear for most Americans. Jeans went from a niche market to a billion dollar industry in the span of a generation. The evolution of style and shopping trends is fast. And sometimes, the changes usher in a whole new American way of life.

Fashion and shopping go hand in hand. Shopping and the mobile internet are even cozier than that. Everyone and their toddler have a smartphone or mobile device these days, and they are using them for way more than making calls. Here’s a chalkboard and some facts:

88% - Number of Americans that prefer online shopping

$1084 - Average annual e-commerce revenue per shopper in the U.S.

2.14 - Billion People expected to make an online purchase worldwide in 2021

50% - Online purchases made through a mobile device

$4.28 Trillion - Ecommerce sales in U.S. dollars worldwide in 2020

Mobile shopping has almost quadrupled in volume since 2014, and it’s not slowing down anytime soon. The pandemic has pushed even more shoppers online, adding another $105 billion in U.S. internet sales alone in 2020 – that’s a 32.4% growth rate. Everyone wants a piece of this magically growing pie.

As online shopping evolves, third-party order fulfillment companies are popping up left and right. Their whole business model centers around packaging and shipping. You can bet your cowboy boots they’re capitalizing on cheaper and lighter shipping methods. Sure, big boxes still have their place. But as online shopping keeps growing, smaller and lightweight orders (jeans!) are increasingly going into Poly Mailers. And why not? Poly Mailers are cheaper and more secure, and they’re easily branded with logos and company names. The North American polybag mailers market is expected to reach $ 2 Billion by 2031. It’s a whole new mail and ship world. Diversified Plastics is right in the thick of it with bigger, better than ever Mailing & Shipping inventory options.

Packaging isn’t just packaging anymore – it’s an opportunity to showcase brand value. Companies pay attention to the packaging their products arrive in, opting for brightly colored and printed mailers. Blank space is an opportunity for advertisement. Our print option offerings brings branding to the forefront with simplicity and speed. We offer full bleed multi-color spot and CMYK process printing on all sides.

Eventually, inevitably, that first pair of jeans just didn’t fit. You needed another size, options. The same holds true for Poly Mailers. Diversified Plastics stocks and sources the universe of Poly Mailers. An unlimited array of custom sizes, printed and plain. All Poly Mailers are made with a co-extruded blend. Standard non-perforated, perforated, returnable, expandable and now, Poly Mailers made with 50% Recycled Content.

What’s the difference between Ultraviolet  Inhibitors (UVI) and Ultraviolet Absorbers (UVA)

We all know the effects of the sun's UV Rays. Polymers are particularly vulnerable (i.e., plastics, rubbers, neoprene and PVC). When UV Rays are absorbed by a polymer it excites the photons in the material, which causes the molecular make up to break down. The result, known as UV degradation, creates damaging physical and chemical changes to the material. Plastics without UV protection are subject to cracking, loss of strength and flexibility as well as disintegration over time. The product stored in  or under the poly bag/film will no longer be contained or protected.

So, what to do about UV Rays?   Bagged potting soil, fertilizer, mulch, and animal bedding is often palletized and stored outside.   These bagged products need the right protection to prevent UV degradation. Enter Ultraviolet Inhibitors and Ultraviolet Absorbers.

The terms UVI and UVA get thrown around a lot, but what do they actually do to prevent UV degradation and what is the difference between the two?

UVI is an additive that can be included in poly films to extend the life and performance of your product by delaying the oxidation process caused by UV Rays. Think of it as sunblock for your skin  – it gets the job done.

UVA, in turn, absorbs UV Rays and boasts the ability to prevent colors from fading.   UVA provides an extra boost if you want to prevent the printing or color of the film from diminishing. UVA is the sunblock  you put on your face that also moisturizes and protects.

Unfortunately, as with sunblock, the effectiveness of UVI and UVA isn’t infinite. UVI and UVA only last between 1 and 3 years for most applications. That should be kept in mind when considering the outside shelf life  of a packaged product .

Poly bags, stretch film, boat film, pallet covers and containment film are just a few examples of items that can be pumped up with UVI/UVA protection. A wide range of other flexible packaging products can also be manufactured with these additives. Not only does this ensure the protection and preservation of the equipment being covered, but it will extend the effectiveness and life of the cover itself.

Let’s dive deeper. Call 800-959-1337 to discuss UVI & UVA in greater detail

Plastics 101: From Resins to Rolls

Plastics 101 From Resins to RollsWalking you through the fascinating blown film extrusion process, from plastics resins to finished rolls.

At the surface, plastic film seems like a very straightforward and simple product. Many think plastic cling wrap and grocery bags are the extent to which films are used, when in reality plastic film is used in the majority of modern packaging designs. Aside from visual characteristics such as color and clarity, a copious amount of more complicated technical considerations must be taken into account. Gas and moisture barriers, heat resistance, and tensile strength are just a few examples of characteristics that must be planned out when designing and manufacturing any roll of film.

One of the most popular forms of modern plastic manufacturing is called blown film extrusion. Those familiar with  the industry in general can likely identify recognizable steps along the process, such as the bubble or the extruders. However, most are unaware of how the process actually occurs. In our first Plastics 101, we’d like to walk you through the blown film process, from polymer resins to finished rolls.

Ingredients First

Each roll of film, no matter the size or shape, begins its life as a polymer in resin form. These resins vary in chemical make-up and color, and are typically only a few millimeters in diameter.

You’ll often hear about post-consumer resins (PCR) or post-industrial resins (PIR). PCR and PIR are resins that have been sourced from recycled materials that have been used in either consumer or industrial applications. The use of these recycled resins greatly reduces the amount of virgin resins created, lowering the overall environmental impact of plastic manufacturing.

Different types of resins can be added to the formula depending on the desired application of the finished product. For example, if you are designing a film for liquid packaging, you might mix in high density polyethylene due to its superior oxygen barrier properties.

When it comes to resins, we can think of them as the ingredients that a chef uses when cooking. They can vary in appearance and properties, but at the end of the process they all work together to form the final dish.

Extrusion and the Bubble

Once the resins are gathered, they're fed into the extruders. The extruders melt and mix the resins to ensure a homogenous blend. This process occurs via very high temperatures and pressure. The melted resins move from the extruders on to the die/air ring, where the molten plastic will be expanded upwards via blown air. This is where the process gets its ‘blown film’ name.

Reaching the Finish Line

The now cooled film reaches the top of the tower, being pulled upwards by the nip rolls which stretch it to the desired thickness. The nip rolls also prevent air from escaping throughout the process, and prevent wrinkles from developing in the film. It is here where the collapsing frame converts the bubble to flat tubing, and we begin to see a product that is more recognizable.

With the film now flattened, it moves along to the treaters. The treaters will roughen the surface of the film, making it suitable for printing and lamination. This treating process is an electro-static process that gives the film optimal surface tension properties.

After going through the treaters, the film reaches its final stop: the winders. The winders take the now treated, flat film, and wind it onto cores to form rolls of finished product. Depending on the desired size, the rolls can be cut and separated.

Finally, the operators take the finished rolls of film and load them up onto our trucks, ready to be shipped to our valued customers.

WHAT IS A CLEAN ROOM?

A Clean Room is an environment that is free from dust and other contaminants. Many industries require high standards of cleanliness in the manufacturing and packaging process to prevent cross contamination, hence this is done in a Clean Room. Items transported in and out of this room must also adhere to the same standards: this is where Clean Room Bags come in.

WHAT MAKES THE BAG "CLEAN"?

Clean Room Bags are classified by the number of particles found inside the item per square 0.1m. This is measured using a particle counter. In the U.S., Clean Room Products must meet ISO 14644-1 & FED STD 209E standards. Depending on the Class, a maximum number of particles are allowed per square 0.1m. Our Clean Room Bags & Tubing meet performance parameters as outlined in ISO 14644-1 for an ISO Class 5 clean room at 0.5 microns, more commonly known as Class 100 (Class 200 for Zip Tops). Made from 100% virgin resin, these bags contain no additives, and all cases are double poly lined to further prevent contamination.

WHO USES CLEAN ROOM BAGS?

Many industries require Clean Room Packaging for the safe transportation of items in and out of Clean Room facilities. Some of these industries include: pharmaceutical, electronics, aerospace, medical, dental, optic, military, and more. This will ensure that the items being packaged will not be compromised by dust or other contaminants which could adversely affect things in the manufacturing process.

WHAT GOES IN CLEAN ROOM BAGS?

Items that have been sterilized then put into a Clean Room, or clean area, such as dental or medical devices used in an operating room, would be found in a Clean Room Bag. Garments that would be opened in a clean room in order to keep the clean room secure, like gloves, surgical caps and shoe covers, would also go in Clean Room Packaging. Computer components that need to stay in a clean, sterile environment until being used, such as circuit boards and sound cards may also be packaged in a Clean Room Bag.

K 2019 Sets Clear Signal for Responsible Handling of Plastics

At the recent K Fair, the world’s No. 1 trade fair for Plastics and Rubber, 3,330 exhibitors from 63 nations impressively demonstrated that plastic continues to be an innovative, indispensable and future-oriented material. At the same time, the exhibitors unanimously underscored the necessity of having operational circular economies along the complete material chain and presented concrete solutions. The approximately 225,000 visitors from 165 countries were especially interested in recycling systems, sustainable raw materials and resource-saving processes. K 2019 was also characterized by a high willingness to invest. It was evident that the international trade visitors were ready to prepared for the future with the latest technologies.

“K 2019 came at precisely the right point in time. Its enormous importance for the sector is underscored by its high acceptance from all over the world. Nowhere else is the industry represented as internationally and completely as here in Düsseldorf every three years,” said Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, President & CEO of Messe Düsseldorf. “Especially in times of great challenges, a platform like the K is indispensable. It provides guidance and perspectives, sets sustainable economic impulses, shows forward-looking trends and concrete approaches. The industry and its professional associations enjoyed the unique opportunity here to present sector-specific solutions and to discuss socio-politically relevant issues on a global basis. And they made excellent use of this opportunity."

Ulrich Reifenhäuser, chairman of the K 2019 exhibitor advisory board, was also pleased with the K 2019 results: “The plastics and rubber industry succeeded in proving once again that plastic is not only very valuable material with outstanding properties but also that this industry assumes responsibility along the entire value chain. The buzzwords at K 2019 “Reflect. Re-Think. Think Laterally. Think Afresh.” were reflected at the exhibitors’ stands. Never before has the industry addressed a topic so unanimously and worked so consistently on solutions as it has now done in the areas of environmental compatibility, resource conservation and avoiding waste. There is a real sense of optimism in the industry, the current dynamic is overwhelming.”

The positive atmosphere at K 2019 was also evident by concrete demands at the stands. “It became clear that global demand for innovative machinery and raw materials is particularly high right now, despite the current tensions in world trade or the business climate in some consumer sectors. This year’s K has by far exceeded our expectations and was able to generate key impetus for sustainable governance and new business models,” added Reifenhäuser.

After Germany, the majority of the visitors came from Italy, the Netherlands, India, Turkey, China and the U.S. A marked increase in the number of trade visitors from the Russian Federation, Japan and Brazil was also registered.

The U.S. was also well represented on the exhibitor side: 108 exhibitors showed their products at K 2019, including 38 companies within the two successful U.S. pavilions, organized by Messe Düsseldorf North America and supported by The Plastics Industry Association.

The K 2019 exhibits were complemented by an extensive ancillary program consisting of keynotes and high-caliber discussions on topics such as renewable energies, material efficiency and zero-waste. A highlight was the Special Show K 2019 “Plastics shape the Future”. This year the innovative power of the material and the industry in terms of resource-saving processes, digitalization, functionality, renewable energies, circular economy and sustainability were the leading subjects. Also on the agenda were critical themes such as marine litter, the throw-away mentality associated with plastic packaging and the use of finite resources for their production. Another highlight was a humanoid robot built during K 2019 by young researchers from FabLab Lübeck e.V. to show where developments are headed in future when additive manufacturing and robotics are combined with cutting-edge materials such as plastics.

The next K trade fair will be held from October 19 – 26, 2022 in Düsseldorf, Germany. For further information, visit www.k-online.com

COEX Poly Mailers

Fashion and shopping go hand in hand. And shopping and the mobile internet are getting even cozier than that. Everyone and their toddler has a smartphone or mobile device available these days. Amazingly though, mobile shopping is still pretty nascent. Mobile shopping has actually doubled in volume since 2013, and it’s not slowing down anytime soon. Over half of Americans now prefer online shopping. One in four has made a purchase online while actually standing in a store. One in five has placed an online order while in their car. Retail e-commerce sales worldwide are predicted to nearly double from 2016 to 2020. And everyone wants a piece of this magically growing pie.

As online shopping evolves, third party order fulfillment companies are popping up left and right. They’re the ones packaging the year’s latest trends and sending it to retail consumers. Their whole business model centers around packaging and shipping. You can bet they’re capitalizing on cheaper and lighter shipping methods. This is a seismic shift for packaging providers . This burgeoning industry of logistic fulfillment companies are a new type of end user—not big retail behemoths, but agile consumer companies. They’re specializing in stocking and shipping product and managing returns with speed and accuracy. But as online shopping keeps growing, smaller and lightweight orders are increasingly going into Poly Mailers. Poly Mailers are cheaper and more secure, and they’re easily branded with logos and company names.

The experience of opening a purchase straight from a bag is now critical to brand value. After all, there are fewer in-store experiences to complement them. Companies are paying attention to the packaging their products arrive in, choosing colors or even text and graphics with multi-colored images. With Diversified Plastics , branding is simple. We provide full-color mailers and two-sided printing . They’re endlessly versatile and customizable.

We stocks and source in the universe of Poly Mailers. An unlimited array of custom sizes, printed and plain, are readily available through Diversified Plastics. Stock and custom printed. Expandable mailers with gusseted bottoms. We are a comprehensive source for poly mailers, packing list envelopes, postal approved and lip and tape bags. Diversified Plastics is becoming the place for Mail and Ship.

5 PACKAGING TRENDS TO WATCH IN 2019

A New Sustainability Focus
The environmental impact of packaging has been a major topic of conversation for decades, but has so often solely centered on recyclability. In 2019, keep an eye on how sustainability is framed, and the ways converters, brands and retailers can extend the conversation. According to David Luttenberger of Mintel, much of the backlash against packaging — particularly plastic packaging — in 2018, was misleading. "So many of the claims were so outlandish," he says. "They didn't do anything to educate the consumer, but they did a lot to scare and misinform the consumer. I believe in 2019, we're going to begin to see brands use on-pack communication to talk more simply and more succinctly to consumers about what is compostable and what is the definition of plastic free?" He adds that Mintel is suggesting brands take a "plastic responsible" approach to packaging by using plastic in an environmentally responsible manner, and educating consumers about proper plastic reuse and disposal.

Packaging Illustrated
Print technology has become so advanced that photographs of consumer products can be pristinely replicated on packaging. But, according to multiple experts, consumers can expect to see an increasing number of product and ingredient illustrations on packaging this year. Taylor Getler of Works Design Group explains that the use of illustrations gives brands freedom to utilize graphics to speak to specific consumer lifestyles. Luttenberger meanwhile, explains that illustrations can give off the appearance of a natural, wholesome product.

Smarter Packaging for a Better Experience
Smart or interactive packaging has been emerging for years, but experts predict that this year it is poised to become more contextually relevant to the consumer experience. Rather than novelties or gimmicks, smart packaging will serve as a resource for consumers to learn more about the product and its brand, and how it fits into their individual lives.

Reimagined Women's Products
According to Getler, consumers are becoming increasingly aware of how brands are marketing products to them. In women's product categories in particular, Getler says to expect a shift away from overtly pink packaging designs that do little to speak to the consumer as an individual. Instead, she explains women's product brands are transitioning away from stereotypical hot pink to more elegant designs. One brand she says is leading the way in this category is Flamingo, a provider of razors and related products.

Cannabis Goes Mainstream
As cannabis and cannabis-related products continue to achieve a varying degree of legality, brands in this space will need packaging that not only attracts consumers, but provides the necessary degree of security cannabis products require. Getler explains that brands are steering away from the stereotypical stoner imagery associated with cannabis and into more refined designs. Just like in other product segments, she says a variety of consumers legally use cannabis, and its packaging should be multidimensional.

What You Recycle Could Help Fill Your Next Order

Diversified Plastics is pleased to offer our customers plastic bags made from recycled polyethylene materials. Plastic bags, sheeting and tubing are one of the most commonly finished products to recycle. Once recycled, they can be made into a variety of products, including agricultural/construction (a.k.a. C&A) films and trash bags. We offer earth-friendly poly mailers too. Our earth-conscious customers appreciate reduced landfill waste and reduced demand for virgin plastics. We also offer bags made with biodegradable additives. The resulting plastic film and bags exhibit the same desired properties and have effectively similar shelf-lives. Once disposed of the film metabolizes into biomass by the communities of microorganisms commonly found almost everywhere on this planet.

WHAT IS POLYETHYLENE?

What is a plastic?

A plastic is a synthetic or man-made resin, a material similar in many ways to natural resins found 'in trees and other plants. It generally has a high molecular weight. (A molecule is the smallest existing particle of a chemical compound; it is made up of at least two atoms, an atom being the smallest basic particle of a chemical element. The molecular weight is the sum of the weights of all the atoms in a molecule.)

A plastic is solid in its unprocessed and processed states, but in between, while it is being processed into finished items, it is softened enough through to be formed into a variety of shapes ranging from refrigerator containers to plastic film.

There are two major subdivisions of the huge family of plastics, made on the basis of their behavior toward heat - thermosets and thermoplastics.

Thermosets, or thermosetting plastics, generally soften only once under heat and do not soften again on subsequent heating (no more than a hard-boiled egg heating and made rigid by cooling (just as ice can time and again be "softened" into water by heating and remade into ice by cooling).

Polyethylene is a thermoplastic with outstanding properties.

The polyethylene resins are thermoplastics.

What are the properties that make polyethylene a thermoplastic raw material particularly suitable for thousands of end products? There are a great many of them, such as light weight, flexibility, toughness, high chemical resistance, and outstanding electrical properties. For specific applications only some of them may be essential.

The properties of a polyethylene resin are mainly, though not exclusively, dependent on three basic molecular properties - density, average molecular weight, and molecular weight distribution. These basic properties, in turn, are controlled by the size, structure, and uniformity of the polyethylene molecule.

HACCP-Certified Packaging Partner for Food-Related Applications

HACCP stands for Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point. This is used in the food industry to control hazards associated with food processing. The FDA definition for it is this:

a management system in which food safety is addressed through the analysis and control of biological, chemical and physical hazards from raw material production, procurement and handling, to manufacturing, distribution and consumption of the finished product.

HACCP can be required for many things across various industries, but if you’re dealing with Diversified Plastics & Packaging (DPP), the only HACCP certifications that are relevant are for food packaging.

With HACCP, DPP addresses a critical step of the process for food safety. As the supplier, we are on the front line in the food packaging process and HACCP is the vehicle that jump-starts the steps needed to ensure that proper, mandated safety is followed throughout the entire process.

These steps include certain practices around manufacturing lines such as hairnets, beard-nets, pest-control and more. Of course, no food or uncovered drinks are allowed near the lines, either. All of these practices are employed and enforced stringently to control and/or eliminate hazards and ensure end-user safety. HACCP-enabled manufacturing lines are audited each and every year by a third-party company called DAC.

HACCP was originally developed together by NASA and Pillsbury to prevent food borne illnesses for astronauts. HACCP has since become mandated by the USDA for meat and poultry products and by the FDA for seafood and juices.

As determined by the USDA, there are seven principles of HACCP, which were last updated in 1998. With any handling and packaging of food, we know how important it is to you in determining if the supplier you are using follows safe and mandated practices. You can rest easy. DPP is your HACCP-certified packaging partner for food-related applications.

7 Reasons to Make the Switch to Flexible Packaging Today

Flexible packaging is any package or any part of any package with a shape that you can easily change.

Flexible packaging includes produce poly bags, reclosable zip lock bags, retail handle bags, wicket bags, tubing, box liners, pallet covers and pouches that we
sell at Diversified Plastic.

Here are 7 Reasons to Seek out Flexible Packaging:

  1. It’s Lightweight

First, flexible packaging isn’t heavy like other storage containers, such as boxes, bins and drums. Instead, made from plastic materials, flexible packaging is lightweight and easy to tote.

  1. It’s Easy to Store

Storage items like boxes, bins and drums are bulky and awkward. You can’t put them just anywhere. Plus, wherever you put them, they end up taking up a lot of room.

    Not so with flexible packaging!

You can stash your flexibly packed items just about anywhere, from the back of your storage locker to a remote corner in your industrial freezer. With flexible packaging, rigid corners are not an issue.

  1. It Requires Less Energy to Manufacture and Package

Another great advantage of flexible packaging is the fact that it requires less energy than all other types of packaging to produce!

This translates into lower costs, faster turnaround times and, most importantly, fewer greenhouse gases.

  1. It Consumes Less Energy During Transit

Likewise, lightweight packaging requires and produces much less energy during shipment and transportation than does non-flexible packaging.

    For example,
according to FPA, while it takes 26 truckloads to transport a load of unfilled glass jars for packaging, it takes only one truckload to transport the same amount of unfilled plastic pouches.

Fewer trucks on the roads lead to less gas and natural resource consumption, as well as fewer carbon emissions. It’s a win-win!

  1. You Can Easily Print on It or Label It

It’s super easy and inexpensive to get words or a design printed onto your flexible packaging.

In addition, your end-user will have no problem writing on flexible packaging with a permanent marker.

If you’re interested in bags that you can label, check out our,
reclosable zip bags, which come with easy to write on white blocks!
  1. It’s Easier on the Environment

Since flexible packaging is usually made from plastic materials, it’s almost always recyclable. Now, more than ever, it’s extremely important that we seek sustainability.

Recycling and making sure that less consumer waste that is sent to landfills is a great place to start.

Plus, when you recycle and reuse your materials, your business saves time and money.

  1. It Keeps Your Items Fresh and Free From Contaminants

Flexible packaging isn’t just good looking and easier on the environment. It also does a great job of keeping your parts, products or goods fresh and uncompromised.

Because flexible packaging is resealable, it maintains and indicates freshness. This allows for the extended shelf life of food and other perishable items.

Even if you aren’t storing perishables, flexible packaging still has a lot to offer. It keeps your items, whatever they are, safe from water, dust and all other kinds of contamination.

Is Stretch Film Right for You?

Stretch Wrap is a highly stretchable plastic film commonly made from linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) that is wrapped around items. The elastic recovery keeps the items tightly bound. Stretch film is commonly used to wrap products on pallets and secure them to each other and the pallet. This often helps to reduce products loss, discourage load tampering, and reduce worker injury.

Cast Stretch and Blown Stretch Wrap are common stretch wrap solutions. Cast stretch wrap has excellent clarity, requires less force to stretch, has increased tear resistance, unwinds quietly from machines, and offers a superior cling. Cast Stretch Film generally is less expensive than Blown Stretch Film. Increased clarity allows users to see wrapped products. Cast stretch wrap unwinds quietly compared to Blown. Cast Stretch Film offers two sided cling that allows the wrap to stay securely wrapped. Cast does not offer the load/holding power Blown Stretch Film offers. Cast Stretch Film has less memory and tear resistance than blown stretch film.

Blown Stretch Wrap is generally tougher and more resilient than Cast. Typically Blown Wrap has a greater load holding power and stretch capacity. Blown Stretch Film is a higher quality of film. Blown Stretch Film has a higher degree of memory once stretched allowing loads to stay better secured. Higher tear resistance is an advantage when securing loads with sharp edges. Blown Stretch Wrap is generally a higher cost solution. Blown Stretch Wrap has poor clarity and is also noisy when unwound from rolls.

Now Offering “Returnable” Poly Mailers

Poly Mailers

A lightweight (typically opaque) plastic bag with a permanent adhesive seal used to send items through the mail are considered non-returnable. Some film used for these bags are made of two or more layers of different materials. Each material has a different function. A food vacuum bag, for example, has a layer of material that keeps oxygen from passing through. Poly Mailer’s layers provide added tear strength, opacity and different colors inside (silver) vs. out (white).

Returnable Poly Mailers

Returnable poly mailers offer all of the same features as regular poly mailers, but in addition to the permanent adhesive seal to close the bag securely, these mailers contain a second adhesive and a perforated tear strip. This allows the user to reseal an opened Poly Mailer to return its contents. Our stock offerings are in the three most requested sizes and are priced very competitively. Our returnable mailers have all the features of the best poly mailers on the market: tear strength, opacity, an adhesive strip, and a perforated tear opening. They are built to last, tamper proof, and are water resistant. Our returnable poly-mailers come with or without a perforation below the permanent tape closure. They are 2.5 mil, co-extruded, and are opaque. The co-extruded film is a blend of low density and linear low density polyethylene (LDPE & LLDPE). This is the most common construction and composition of all products within this category.

What You Didn’t Know About Shaving Bags

No, in case you were wondering, shaving bags don’t have anything to do with the razor that you use to shave your face. They’re actually used to package wood shavings and similar products that are used in horse stables or for other animals. These bags are all filled tightly with the same volume of shavings so that they can be stacked for shipping or storage. The label on the front of the bag usually indicates the volume of the contents when compressed versus the expanded volume (when the contents are emptied from the packaged). Farmers and managers of other agricultural facilities often have shaving bags on hand so that they can spread them out in stables or on paddocks to absorb moisture and reduce the smell of manure with fresh wood shavings

At Diversified Plastics & Packaging Inc., we can make custom shaving bags for you, no matter what animals you’re looking after! Our bags come in different sizes to accommodate a variety of volumes and shaving sizes. We can even provide you with bags that are specifically designed to work with drop feeders, sealers and fill equipment. We can add a handle to your bags and custom print in up to 8 different colors to display your company’s name or logo. We use UVI inks during printing to protect the graphics on the plastic from fading.

With shaving bags from Diversified, you don’t have to worry about plastic deterioration causing damage to your product, because we use special blended film to ensure the integrity of your bags. This film is also low-slip, making it perfect for stacking. With a shaving bag from Diversified, you’ll have quality packaging that gives your company a professional image and protects that contents of the bag for as long as your customers need it to.

If you’re interested in our shaving bags or the many other plastic products that we offer, call us today at 1-800-959-1337. We would be more than happy to answer your questions and come up with a packaging solution that works for your business. What Are Gas Flushing Bags?

You may or may not have heard of gas flushing bags before. Either way, you’re probably wondering how they work, what they’re for and where you can get them. We have the answer to all three of those questions! We’ll get to each one, but let’s start with how gas flushing bags work.

Just like a vacuum sealed bag, a gas flushing bag seals out oxygen to preserve the product inside. However, during flushing other gasses are added to the bag, such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen. The result is a modified gas atmosphere around the product that is totally sealed off from oxygen. In a temperature controlled environment, this can help to create a shelf life for perishable products that is dramatically longer than it would be in any other type of packaging.

Now on to the second question: what do you use gas flushing bags for? Well, gas flushing bags are actually quite commonly used as packaging for goods like coffee, snack foods and meat. Have you ever purchased frozen chicken breasts? Chances are that they were packaged in a gas flushing bag to keep them fresh.

If you are searching for modified atmosphere packaging to keep your products fresh, where can you get gas flushing bags? That’s easy; at Diversified Plastics & Packaging Inc.! Our bags come in a variety of sizes, shapes and customizable styles to suit your product. With gas flushing bags from Diversified Plastic, you can control the quality of your product and give customers added value with packaging that they can rely on.

We’ve been in the packaging business for over 25 years, so you can trust us to fulfill your orders with a high quality solution that works for you. With superior customer service, free test samples and same-day shipping; what’s not to love? We even offer volume discounts if you are looking for a large production run. Our customers trust us to efficiently provide them with affordable packaging solutions that enhance the appeal of their final product. VCI Bags

A VCI bag protects metal products from corrosion by creating a barrier from moisture, dirt and other elements that could begin the corrosion process. VCI stands for vapour corrosion inhibitor. The ability to store metal parts over long periods of time without the worry of corrosion can be very important in many industries where mechanical parts are sold or used to repair existing equipment. Suppliers can keep parts on hand for years before someone purchases them, so it’s important that those parts don’t corrode and lose their value over time. Replacement parts are usually needed quickly once something breaks, so it’s better to have the right part on hand than to wait for parts to arrive.

VCI bags can be heat sealed to keep them securely locked during storage. At Diversified Plastics & Packaging, we can manufacture your VCI bags in a variety of custom sizes to fit whatever part or product that you are hoping to store. VCI packaging should be designed with the specific metals that it will be holding in mind. This will help determine what plastic formula is optimal, and it will provide ideal protection if the product is being shipped over a long distance or store in an enclosure for an extended length of time. Any printing on the VCI bag should be printed on the outside to prevent the ink from seeping onto the product.

A VCI bag is an excellent way to protect an expensive metal component for shipping or storage. While metal is a strong and commonplace material in most industries, it is also very susceptible to rust without the proper protection. VCI bags lock out condensation and make sure that the part is as good as new when it is removed from the bag.

To learn more about our VCI bags or the many other packaging products that we offer, call Diversified Plastics & Packaging today toll free at 1-800-959-1337. Our quality products are the perfect compliment to the packaging of any item in your business. We boast a full line of advanced packaging products with highly customizable and colorful designs. With superior customer service and free test samples, it’s hard to imagine why you would call anyone else!

How VCI Works

Corrosion inhibitor compounds vaporize from poly film. They are attracted to the charged surface of the metal by virtue of their polar orientation. The VCI molecules align on the surface of the metal. This layer of molecules passivates the charged surface and creates a barrier that prevents oxidation. The corrosion cell (the flow of electrons in the metal and the flow of ions in the electrolytic surface layer) is unable to establish itself. Corrosion is halted.   Store or ship your metal parts in VCI packaging. When the parts are unwrapped, the protective layer immediately begins to dissipate. The metal parts are clean, corrosion-free and ready to use. No washing, dipping or cleaning is necessary. The VCI molecules migrate into recesses and hard to reach areas on even the most complex shapes. The molecules build up on the metal surface until a continuous barrier has formed on the metal part. When metals are wrapped or packaged in VCI, the chemicals volatilize in the packaging environment, forming a protective molecular layer on the surface of the metal. This protective layer serves as a barrier, preventing moisture, salt, dirt, oxygen, and other corrosion causing materials from depositing directly on the metal and causing rust and corrosion.

Making Durable Mulch Bags for the Landscaping Industry

Around this time of year you will notice mulch being spread in flower beds around business and residential properties. You might have also seen it for sale by the bag at your local garden center. Landscapers and home gardeners use mulch to inhibit the growth of weeds in flower beds and improve the appearance of a garden. Mulch can be purchased in a variety of colors, but it is usually dark and contains bits of shredded wood and dirt. Homeowners often purchase their mulch in bags, because they can easily transport multiple bags home in their vehicle and then dump the bags in their garden. But where do these mulch bags come from? Well, they are manufactured by companies like Diversified Plastics and Packaging Inc. before being filled with mulch and shipped out on pallets to hardware stores and garden centers.

Our mulch bags can be printed with up to 8 colors to help make your logo stand out. Our design team can help by creating an image that fits on the front of the bag and adds some style to your mulch packaging. We also use plastic that is slip-resistant, reducing the risk of mulch bags falling off of a pallet after they are filled and stacked for shipping. One very useful feature of our mulch bags is a unique UVI film that protects bags left out in the elements for an extended period of time. The film prevents water or sun damage to the plastic, and preserves the color of the printed image. During manufacturing, we can add small air vents to the bag to allow moisture to be released.

Mulch suppliers use our mulch bags to package and sell their product because they know that we will create a durable bag that catches customers’ eyes and securely contains the mulch until it is needed. When you are selling such a common but important product, an attractive packaging design and durable bag can make a big difference down the road when your product is stacked up beside someone else’s. To learn more about our mulch bags, as well as our topsoil and landscaping bags, call us directly at 800-959-1337. We can handle your specific inquiry and get started on a bag solution for your product. We can even provide you with samples to confirm the size that you need, so don’t hesitate to get in touch!

Keep food products fresh with reclosable bags

A reclosable bag, also known as a resealable bag, is a convenient way to keep products fresh after they are opened. Many common grocery store foods are now sold in reclosable bags so that a person can use only a small amount and save the rest for use at another time. This keeps food from going bad, which in turn reduces waste. It can be hard for someone who lives in a small household to use a large bag of fresh peppers in the span of just a couple days, so being able to reseal the bag means they can use them as-needed without having to throw some out.

For food brands, reclosable bags are more than just a convenient feature for customers. If your product is very similar to another one on the shelf, but yours is the only one that comes in a resealable bag, customers are more likely to buy yours. It is a small change that can make a big difference. At Diversified Plastics & Packaging Inc., we can create customized reclosable bags for your product so you can offer more value to your customers. You would be surprised by what a difference functional packaging can make.

Reclosable bags are not just used from food products. Many companies use these bags to contain small parts or items that need to be protected from water and dust. Just like the bag won’t let anything out, the seal won’t let anything in either. This means that products that are stored for long periods of time before use will not be affected by moisture or become dirty before they are needed.

Our line of reclosable bags includes ziplock bags, clear bags, white block bags and more. We can also manufacture completely customized reclosable bags. Our bags are food safe and they can be tightly sealed to lock out air and maintain freshness. With our white block bags, clients can easily affix a label to the bag or simply write directly on the bag to identify the contents inside.

If you want to learn more about how reclosable bags from Diversified Plastics & Packaging Inc. could be used in your business, contact us today! We welcome the opportunity to tell you more about our products and design a solution for your packaging needs.

Diversified Plastics - Potting Soil Bags

Garden centers and nurseries always sell large plastic bags of potting soil for gardening. The bags are usually stacked up on pallets and stores order them from their supplier by the pallet. At Diversified Plastics, we manufacture potting soil bags for a number of clients. The bags can be printed in up to eight colors to show off a company logo and include a picture. This colorful packaging catches people’s eye and makes the product easy to identify. The plastic we use for our potting soil bags is a special low-slip film that prevents that bags from sliding around when they are stacked on a pallet.

Another unique feature of our potting soil bags is that we can manufacture them using UVI film. This film protects the bag from deteriorating when it is left out in the weather for an extended period of time. This is important because many garden centers may store pallets of potting soil bags outside and only display one pallet at a time to customers. It could take a long time to sell all of the soil this way, so it is important that the bags that are sitting outside for a long time still hold together when they are finally purchased by a customer.

Our potting soil bags can also be manufactured with pin vents to allow air to escape after packaging. This provides a release for any moisture that would be otherwise trapped in the bag.

A bag of potting soil is convenient for gardeners and landscape professionals because it can be used to fill flower pots or beds, providing a nutrient-rich environment for your favorite plants. Pete moss is usually mixed in with the soil to help retain water during rain or watering. Most bags are measured by volume to maintain consistency during packaging.

Many bulk material providers trust Diversified Plastics to provide them with customized potting soil bags for their customers. Once they have their bags they fill, seal and palletize them for shipping. Our durable plastic potting soil bag contains the soil and presents customers with an easily-identifiable product for their home garden.

Diversified Plastics – Food Packaging

With the exception of some fresh produce, all of the food that we buy at our local grocery stores is packaged to maintain freshness and prevent it from being contaminated. This packaging can be as simple as a vacuum sealed plastic bag, to a resalable plastic container or bottle to a thin cardboard box. Any type of food that can quickly expire after opening is packaged in an air-tight container or bag so that it stays fresh long enough to make it from the supplier to the grocery store to be sold to a consumer who will use it before the expiration date.

Modern food packaging helps to reduce waste by preserving food for longer periods of time. Before packaging became so advanced, it was either too costly or the food had to be sold with a much shorter shelf life. This meant that more products were wasted, and it also meant that food processing lines were not held to a high cleanliness standard like they are today. To address the obvious health concerns of food packaging, the FDA regulates packaging facilities to ensure that they are always clean and that no contaminants are present during the packaging process.

Diversified Plastics & Packaging Inc. manufactures a full lineup of food packaging bags for meat, fish, poultry and other perishable food items. We even manufacture high quality bread bags for bakeries and food service industries. The best part is that all of our food packaging products meet the USDA and FDA requirements for food contact, so you will not run into any regulatory issues when you use them to package food in your business or industry.

Food packaging is an essential step in the transition between production and selling on either a commercial or individual level. Large food corporations typically do their packaging in-house using an automated system; while small business will usually buy food packaging supplies and complete the process by hand. At Diversified Plastics, we have built relationships with many partners in the food industry and we continually supply them with the food packaging products that they need to sell their goods. Contact us to learn more about how our customizable food packaging solutions could help your business.

Wide Range of Plastic Shopping Bags

Plastic shopping bags have been a staple of the shopping industry for many years, and each store has their own style of shopping bag. Upscale stores have done their best to increase their plastic bags style and class in order to appeal even further to their target demographic. From a colored bag, to a custom shape to perfectly printed monograms on them plastic bags in the shopping industry are further advertising tools that are used by just about every store out there, no matter their size or demographic.

The customization starts with the type of plastic that is chosen for the bag. Polyethylene and polypropylene are two of the more common plastic choices for plastic bag materials, while other substances such as vinyl plastics are used on occasion. Polyethylene bags provide a different feel and look depending on the process that is used to create the bag. HDPE and LDPE are two subcategories of polyethylene plastic and they can result in thicker and less flexible bags or lighter, thinner and stretchy bags, respectively.

The color can be added during the manufacturing process in order to match the stores branding. The process used can vary greatly as well from blown film extrusion to casting, winding, and sheet extrusion. Logos and other print are added to the bag during secondary processes. There are a wide range of characteristics that can be achieved by plastic shopping bags and virtually all of them can be customized to the stores needs.

What Makes Poly Bags so Great?

Polypropylene Bags, or poly bags, are made from a popular thermoplastic that is non-toxic, sturdy, lightweight, and is clear. These characteristics make poly bags ideal when you consider the wide variety of products that are stored in each bag. Poly bags can be used in the automotive or aerospace industry for storing small production parts or other uses within different manufacturing industries. This protects the parts from hazards like dust or chemicals and provides an easy way to carry the parts as the plastic can support their weight. One of the more popular uses of poly bags is within the food industry; this is where the non-toxic aspect of these bags comes into play.

Depending on the application, the plastic can be altered in order to provide more advantages in certain contexts. For example, zip lock bags can be used for museum and archival storage and these bags must meet strict standards in order to keep historical artifacts intact. Another example of poly bags being altered to fit an application is the addition of drawstrings on shopping bags or a printed bag that displays a stores logo.

There are a number of factors that go into making a poly bag and they all depend on the manufacturer and the customer’s desires. Every process begins the same way however, with the melting down of polypropylene resins until it is a thick liquid which is then extruded through a die. From here the plastic is made into a bubble shape through air pressure and is then stretched into a thin film. The final production steps are where things start to vary depending on desired thickness, custom sizes and other factors.

The Popularity of Clear Plastic Bags

Plastic bags are commonplace in our day to day lives, and clear plastic bags are probably one of the most prevalent types of plastic bags. They are used in a wide range of industries and applications from residential use with zip lock bags to industrial use in packaging and shipping. The main reason clear plastic bags are the go to for these applications is due to the fact that the product can be seen while it is inside the bag. This means an increased shelf life for food items at grocery stores, products remain protected during shipment, and you can see if your sandwich got damaged in the work refrigerator.

Because of the wide range of applications that plastic bags are used in, it should come as no surprise that there are a number of different styles of clear plastic bags. Printed plastic bags are often used in the shipping, pharmaceutical, and medical industries do to the ability of coming with labels printed on them for easy identification. Another way plastic bags can vary from one another is the way they close, the shape they come in and their overall size. Drawstring bags tend to be a bit larger as they are often used in a shopping setting so they must accommodate multiple products, zip lock bags are often used for food purposes so there is no need for extra-large bags, most trash bags come in a wide range of sizes and do not have a closing mechanism and require the user to tie them off.

Whatever you application may be, you can be sure to find a plastic bag that will fit your need. With major thermoplastic being used to create these clear plastic bags, the plastic bags you purchase these days are strong and flexible. While they come in many different styles, plastic bags are here to stay.

The Advantages of Custom Plastic Bags

Throughout virtually every industry plastic bags can be found, from industrial to residential settings. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that custom bag creation options are available. These options are typically utilized by industrial or commercial users as residential applications do not typically require a custom solution. However, industrial and commercial companies may require a plastic bag with very specific requirements. With so many different styles and types of bags, customization of a bag all depends on the type of bag.

Plastic bags are almost always deemed recyclable due to the fact that they are made from polymer resins which are melted and then turned into sheets of film through a number of different manufacturing techniques. Biodegradable plastic bags are also becoming more and more common as our society starts to lean more towards being environmentally conscience. The manufacturing process is determined by the customers’ specifications and requirements, as the thickness of the film varies greatly from application to application. Blown film extrusion and sheet extrusion, for example, will provide two different styles of plastic that will impact the final product.

The application is crucial to determining a lot of things about a bag from color, size, print, no print and the number of bags that will be produced. Clear plastic bags are utilized by manufacturing companies that package items that will be sold in stores; this is so the item can be protected but still visible to potential customers. These bags are also made to custom fit their specific product in addition to being made in a way to prevent theft. Medical bags on the other hand vary greatly from bag to bag; whether it be the color of the bag, the size of the bag or thickness of the plastic all have a specific reason.

All our healthcare liners boast nearly double the required puncture strength."

Clear Plastic Bags: The Anti-Theft Bag

We live in a world where theft is an absolute. It is not a matter of if it will happen, it is a matter of when will it happen and what are you doing to prevent it. From cameras to security guards a lot of stores are taking precautions to protect their merchandise. Although these two solutions, while effective, can be pretty costly for a smaller store. Clear plastic bags offer stores a cheap way to help heighten their security measures. By using clear bags you will deter customers from slipping something extra in their bag on the way out because the contents of their bag will be visible.

These bags are made from a translucent polymer, typically polyethylene or polypropylene. Occasionally acrylics and polyester are used but these are more costly to make and do not offer the same strength qualities as polyethylene and polypropylene.

Polyethylene bags are taken from a polymer resin that is manipulated in order to produce different types of plastic sheets. They are ideal for clear plastic merchandise bags thanks to their resistance to tearing and their strong but flexible nature. Polypropylene bags are cheaper to make but are also strong, flexible, waterproof and tear resistant, making them the ideal choice for shopping bags.

Not only are these bags cheap to purchase in bulk and an effective theft deterrent, they also are easily customized. Stores are able to print their logo or design their bags in a certain way in order to set their bags apart from their competition. So all around clear plastic bags are a great purchase for stores, whether they are looking to deter theft or simply promote their brand.

Cloth or Plastic?

More and more people are becoming aware of the environmental issue we face, which means that more and more people are turning to cloth bag at the grocery store or other applications in order to minimize their impact on plastic waste and the environmental stress that plastic brings. However, plastic bag companies have nothing to fear when it comes to this change. We are confident in saying this because plastic bags are in just about every industry and not all can be replaced by the cloth alternative. On top of this the plastics that are often used in plastic bags can be easily recycled which reduces a company’s carbon footprint as well as the consumers. The two plastics that plastic bags are typically made from, polypropylene and polyethylene, are actually some of the easiest to remold and reuse plastics in the business.

Even companies that only serve a single industry such as those that make plastic shopping bags have nothing to fear as long as they make a dependable product, which we do. Plastic bags are still the more convenient option when shopping. On top of that they are dependable, easy to carry, strong, and most importantly they are easy to recycle. All of these are reasons why plastic bags are not being replaced any time soon.

It’s not just the retail industry that depends on plastic bags; the medical industry also leans on the plastic bag industry to get their job done in the most effective manner. Plastic bags ensure sanitary test results, and are a great, sanitary way of disposing of human waste and blood. The plastic bag itself is very versatile, and plastic bag companies should be as well. With plastic bags having the reach and influence that they do, Plastic bag companies have nothing to fear.

A Spin on Everyday Envelopes

Although most public consumers have never used a plastic mailer or envelope, many industries use plastic envelopes to send important documents, such as confidential papers. These types of documents or contents need more safe-guarding versus the average Christmas card. A need for more secure mailers is one of the reasons why plastic envelopes were designed and manufactured. They provide more protection than paper and do not cost as much in shipping compared to a cardboard box.

Believe it or not, plastic envelopes are a type of plastic bag design. They are sold by plastic bag suppliers because of their plastic material, shape, and flexible plastic design. Most plastic mailers are manufactured with clear plastics like other plastic bags and made from polypropylene or polyethylene for visibility purposes. Since some documents require confidentiality, sometimes a type of white plastic is used for the envelopes. All of the plastic materials used in the design of poly envelopes are lightweight and therefore will not cost as much to manufacture or ship. During the manufacturing process, a molten of plastic resin is formed into plastic sheets and then sealed together to form an envelope. This process is known as co-extrusion.

The way a plastic envelope can be closed is another reason they are attractive to buyers. The plastic envelope incorporates a permanent seal that is tamper-proof, unless someone commits a Federal crime by ripping open the entire envelope and therefore destroying it—which brings me to point out its flaw. Since the envelope has to be torn open by the receiver, it can only be used one time. Although the secure envelopes can only be used once, poly bag manufacturers also supply consumers with resealable plastic envelopes if one would not need the security.

Medical Plastic Bags to the Rescue

Medical plastic bags are critical in their surroundings. They are utilized to rapidly and securely dispose of specific materials that may be unsanitary or infectious. There are limitations that apply to plastic bags that are utilized as a part of the medical field that do not apply to other plastic bags, such as trash bags and shopping bags. For instance, several bags in the healthcare industry have been tested and endorsed by the National Health Service for everyday use in hospitals. These bags are important due to the fact that they keep the spread of contaminations by gathering filthy and communicable items.

One option of plastic bags used in the medical field are called respiratory bags, which are intended to keep the respiratory gear clean and dry. A few assortments of these bags, likewise, incorporate a space for recording such necessities as patients' names, room numbers, dates and other imperative data used in a hospital. Medical plastic bags, additionally, are utilized to prevent the spread of disease. This can be accomplished through the utilization of water dissolvable clothing bags. These bags are intended to stop the spread of disease and minimize the staff interaction with the soiled clothing in the bags. Additionally, they seal in airborne microscopic organisms and are an environmentally friendly since they totally break down when in contact with a certain temperature of water. Vomit bags are also used from plastic material and prevent staff from having to clean up vomit. There are also plastic bags, called emesis control bags, are utilized to contain and prevent the spread of the infection.

Although plastic bags have a variety of uses outside of the hospital, they serve a very important purpose in a hospital or medical center. In an environment surrounded by contamination and disease, it is important to keep the workspace and staff protected.

Gusseted Bags: More than Just a Bag

As most industries in this day and age, the baking industry cannot depend on foot traffic alone to generate the sales needed to stay in business. The number of bakeries that deliver their products to schools, grocery stores, and coffee shops is increasing by the day. This means that the demand for bags for baked goods has also increased. One of the most popular bags in the industry happens to be the gusseted bag, which is made from polypropylene.

The difference between a gusseted plastic bag and your typical plastic bag lies in the seam. The bags are designed to expand when filled with a product. Depending on the application and overall design of the bag, the seam might be found on the bottom of the bag, on the sides, or in some cases both. These bags are typically made from polypropylene or polyethylene; both of these plastics are strong, yet flexible and are transparent or translucent. Gusseted bags are not simply made for the baking industry, you can find them as trash bags, plastic covers, liner bags, some shopping bags, and used for packaging nuts, candy and other products.

Gusseted bags are the “go-to” bag in the baking industry due to easily holding baked goods which often come in a variety of odd shapes such as cookies, loafs of bread, scones, and other shapes. The polypropylene bags are most common due to their transparency property which allows consumers to see the product, increasing the desire of the product. In addition to their flexibility and transparency, polypropylene is also a very sanitary plastic making it idea to use in the food industry due to the fact that it does not pick up germs as easy as other plastics. These properties and the overall design of the bag make the gusseted bag one of the number one bags of the baking industry.

Plastic Bags are Environmentally Friendly

Plastic bags are not normally termed “environmentally friendly”, but plastic bags are an environmentally friendly product. Resealable plastic bags are particularly environmentally friendly since they can be reused multiple times before being recycled by the responsible consumer. Since the plastic bags are made from thermoplastics, they can be melted down and shaped into a fully functional new plastic product after the life ends as a poly bag.

Not only are plastic bags environmentally friendly, they are also customer friendly. Unlike other poly bags, resealable plastic bags have sealing or closing mechanisms at the mouth of the bag that allows a consumer to purchase a box of plastic bags and reuse them numerous times, which makes the most out of the money they have spent. One of the great features of the closing mechanism is that it creates an impermeable seal to water and moisture, air and other elements that could damage the product within the plastic bag. The type of seal varies, usually depending on the brand of plastic bag. For example, zip lock bags are defined by the certain type of seal that is interlocking or slide lock closure. Although it is a style produced by many companies, there are certain companies that dominate the zip lock market.

The manufacturing of resealable poly bags is similar to that of other plastic bag styles. During the production of plastic bags, plastic resins are heated until they are molten, and then turned into a film by way of a variety of methods, such as casting, winding, sheet extrusion or blown film extrusion. Since the chemical composition of plastic will always return to its same chemical base when it is melted, it can be reformed over and over again without altering the quality of the final product. Because of the chemical composition, resealable bags have long-lasting shelf-lives that protect its contents, as well as being able to be reused as new plastic products. Plastic bags are a nice addition of the environmentally friendly products community.

Plastic Bags are Everywhere!

On a daily basis, a person will come into contact with some sort of plastic bag. Plastic bags offer convenience to daily tasks and have different roles based on what type of plastic bag it is. At home, you can use the plastic poly baggies to pack lunches that either wrap around the sandwich or can be zip sealed. These baggies fit over a sandwich like a glove and you can also put side dishes like chips and cookies into them to complete the meal. Plastic produce bags can be used as small trash liners on your bathrooms and bedrooms. Some of these plastic bags have drawstrings at the top, making an easy tie up and take out.

While traversing through the grocery store, you will pass by several types of plastic bags. In the produce section, plastic baggies are provided to put the fruit and veggies you pick out of the bunch and keep them all together when it comes time to weigh and pay. These produce bags are also available for wrapping up your meats in separate bags, as well as for bulk items such as candy. When looking at items stocked in the store, many of them come in prepackaged plastic bag packaging. Lastly, when checking out of the grocery store, most of us have our groceries bagged in the plastic bags that the store provides for us.

Besides seeing many different types of poly bags in the grocery store, heavier duty plastic bags are available to purchase, some with tight seals for storage and others to keep elements like dust and moisture away from the stored objects. Other types of heavy duty trash bags can be used for heavier trash items, as well as yard debris such as leaves. These are just a few areas of our lives that we use plastic bags. The uses for them continue to grow and they will be floating around for a long time.

Using Plastic Bags to Advertise

Every day, millions of bags are produced, making them among the most common plastic product in the world. There are many types of poly bags available and that are used by manufacturing, commercial, and residential places.

An easy way for businesses to advertise is on printed plastic bags. These types of bags can have almost anything printed on them from company logos, funny sayings, customer information, and holiday greetings to usage instructions and recycling information. Companies using a customized printed poly bag that simply states “Thank You” can provide a professional image to consumers.

Printed small bags are not difficult to manufacture and can usually be customized in a cost-efficient manner. Using a thicker plastic bag to customize your company’s ad will look nicer and showcase your printed image or wording more clearly and hold out for longer periods of time. Purchasers may also decide that a thinner style plastic bag, such as a grocery store bag, will work best since consumption is higher.

Depending on your needs, some companies will chose a mixture of paper, thick plastic, or thin plastic bags. Smaller bags are often made from thicker plastic, while larger bags are sometimes made from a thinner plastic.

Polypropylene Bags

The most popular type of thermoplastic used in the plastic bag industry is called polypropylene. This type of plastic is non-toxic, sturdy, flexible, and lightweight—making it perfect for poly bags. The diversity in poly bags makes them an option for many industries and applications. They can be standard sized or custom made with different strengths, colors, sizes, shapes, and prints.

In manufacturing industries, such as automotive or aerospace parts production, polypropylene bags can be used to store small parts. Housing these small parts in poly bags is done to protect them from environmental hazards such as dust and chemicals. Some of these parts can also be larger which may need a heavy plastic for strength and durability. Another major example is polypropylene bags used in the food and beverage industry, where strict FDA regulations require the use of non-toxic bags so that the food is not altered by chemicals seeping in from the plastic.

Another popular type of poly bag is the re-closeable zip bag. These types of bags can be used at home for lunches or for museum and archival storage, depending on the type of protection needed. Drawstrings may be attached for plastic shopping bags in commercial settings, and printed plastic bags are often made of polypropylene as well.

Every process that polypropylene goes through to become a plastic bag begins with melting down the polypropylene resins until it is a thick liquid that is then extruded through a die where air pressure is applied to make the plastic bubble like. The plastic is then stretched out into a thin film where the thickness is carefully controlled. In the final stages, winding, casting or sheet extrusion techniques can be used before cutting the plastic to form individual bags.
