Gusseted Bags: More Than Just a Bag

As most industries in this day and age, the baking industry cannot depend on foot traffic alone to generate the sales needed to stay in business. The number of bakeries that deliver their products to schools, grocery stores, and coffee shops is increasing by the day. This means that the demand for bags for baked goods has also increased. One of the most popular bags in the industry happens to be the gusseted bag, which is made from polypropylene.

The difference between a gusseted plastic bag and your typical plastic bag lies in the seam. The bags are designed to expand when filled with a product. Depending on the application and overall design of the bag, the seam might be found on the bottom of the bag, on the sides, or in some cases both. These bags are typically made from polypropylene or polyethylene; both of these plastics are strong, yet flexible and are transparent or translucent. Gusseted bags are not simply made for the baking industry, you can find them as trash bags, plastic covers, liner bags, some shopping bags, and used for packaging nuts, candy and other products.

Gusseted bags are the “go-to” bag in the baking industry due to easily holding baked goods which often come in a variety of odd shapes such as cookies, loafs of bread, scones, and other shapes. The polypropylene bags are most common due to their transparency property which allows consumers to see the product, increasing the desire of the product. In addition to their flexibility and transparency, polypropylene is also a very sanitary plastic making it idea to use in the food industry due to the fact that it does not pick up germs as easy as other plastics. These properties and the overall design of the bag make the gusseted bag one of the number one bags of the baking industry.
